Resurface instead of ripping it all out.

When the base is sound, resurfacing saves you up to 60% vs full replacement. New tarmac, new resin, fresh blocks — laid straight over the existing, sound sub-base.

When resurfacing works — and when it's a false economy.

Resurfacing is the smart move if — and only if — your existing sub-base is still doing its job. When it is, you save thousands and get a fresh-looking drive in 2 days.

When it isn't, resurfacing is a waste of money that cracks within 2 years. We won't do it. We'll tell you to dig out properly instead. That's the difference between us and the "we'll pop a layer on top" crowd.

Three ways to resurface a drive

1. Tarmac overlay

New 25mm wearing course laid over sound existing tarmac. Requires minor prep (crack sealing, edge trim). Transforms a tired-looking drive in 1 day. £30–£50/m² vs £65–£90 for full replacement.

2. Resin overlay onto existing tarmac

If your tarmac is structurally fine but looks drab, resin bound laid directly over the top transforms it. The tarmac becomes the permeable base. £75–£110/m² — about 35% less than a new resin drive.

3. Block paving re-lay with existing sub-base

Less common, but possible. Lift existing blocks, reuse the sub-base if sound, add fresh sand layer, re-lay blocks in a new pattern or replace with different blocks. Can halve the cost of full replacement.

The resurfacing honest-check:

We check the existing base for: compaction (foot-test, rod-test), drainage (where does the water go?), cracking pattern (structural vs cosmetic), edge integrity (walking or holding?). If any one of those fails — we recommend dig-out, not overlay.

When resurfacing isn't right

  • Sub-base is already failing (wavy surface, sinkage, pooling).
  • Drainage is missing entirely — water shouldn't have anywhere to go.
  • Existing drive is more than 20 years old and never had proper edges.
  • The savings vs. replacement are less than 30% (not worth the risk).

In those cases we'll always quote proper replacement. It's cheaper over 10 years than bodging an overlay.

Common questions

About Driveway Resurfacing.

How do I know if resurfacing will work?
Come out for a free assessment. We test the base thoroughly and tell you honestly whether overlay is viable or whether you'd be throwing money at a problem that needs deeper fixing.
Can I put resin over my old tarmac?
Yes — if the tarmac is structurally sound, we can resurface with resin bound. Big cost saving over full new install. One of our most popular services.
How long does resurfacing take?
Tarmac overlay: 1 day for most drives. Resin overlay: 1–2 days (plus cure). Block re-lay: 2–4 days. You're back to parking quickly.
Does it look like a "patch" job?
No — we resurface the entire drive in one go, so it looks like a brand-new drive. A patch-job looks patched; a resurface looks fresh.
What guarantee does resurfacing carry?
10 years written workmanship guarantee. Shorter than our full-install 15-year cover, because we're partially relying on the existing base — but substantial protection nonetheless.
Is there a middle ground between repair and resurface?
Yes — "dress and repair". Fix any localised failures, then overlay the lot. Gets you 80% of the benefit at 60% of the cost.
