Why gravel is often the right answer

- Fully permeable — SUDS-compliant by default, no planning permission needed.
- Security feature — footsteps and tyres are audible. Burglars hate gravel.
- Cottage aesthetic — matches period properties better than any modern surface.
- Easy to top up — £80-worth of stones every 3 years keeps it looking new.
What a proper gravel driveway install looks like
- Dig out 150mm. Remove old surface / soft soil.
- Lay 100mm MOT Type 1, compacted.
- Geotextile weed membrane, overlapping seams.
- Grid stabiliser — honeycomb plastic panels, interlocked and pegged.
- 50mm of 14–20mm gravel poured and raked into the grid cells.
- Concrete-haunched edges or timber sleeper borders.
Cheap gravel "installs" skip the grid, skip the membrane, sometimes skip the sub-base. They're what you're complaining about when you say you hate gravel.

Grid stabilised vs loose-laid gravel
Loose-laid is a bad idea unless the drive is completely flat and rarely used. The gravel will:
- Scatter onto any adjoining lawn / road every time a car moves on it.
- Form ruts and potholes where tyres always pass.
- Thin out at the edges, exposing the membrane.
Grid stabilisation solves all of that for about £15/m² extra. Worth every penny.
Gravel maintenance — what you're signing up for
- Annual light rake to level any tyre-tracks (takes 10 minutes).
- Yearly weed treatment (one spray, early spring).
- Every 3–4 years: top up one bag per 10m² to keep depth.
That's the whole list. No pressure washing, no sealing, no re-jointing.
